At the moment, SkyDemon offers the same as most other VFR handhelds which is GPS altitude. Assuming a perfect fix, this is your actual altitude above local mean sea level. As soon as one switches to flying relative to another datum (1013.25 for example) SkyDemon, and any other GPS without access to static pressure information, can't really help you any more.

I just wanted to follow up on this, in relation to another thread I have just started on this topic.

GPS Navigation software built for glider pilots (SeeYou, XCSoar, LK8000, ... just to name a few) all let the pilot enter the current QNH, then work out the difference between Flight Level and GPS altitude (based on the difference between QNH and 1013.25 pressure levels), and display the "correct" airspace warnings regardless of whether the airspace is defined in terms of altitude or flight level.

When the device is connected to an instrument giving pressure altitude (eg. an IGC flight logger), this is all done automatically, but otherwise the pilot's QNH input is used.

I would really love to see SD do something similar, given that on a nice day we are quite likely to fly above the transition altitude.

I'l second that.

No; we have no plans to make the GPS-based pseudo-ILS give vertical guidance to ground level.

Can I ask SD team (aside from the point immediately above) if they have allowed the ILS needles in SD instrument panel to be operational down to ground level in the new SD release? I have had such an observation reported to me on a couple of occasions and I would be fully supportive of such a modification.

Bathman: As the originator of this discussion, can we take this thread to "SkyDemon Mobile" as it is now officially in release V 2.1.1 and not just a suggested option, recognising that it may still need refining?

Can I redirect the above request to you Tim, with view to keeping threads in the most appropriate section for ease of reference, and avoid duplication?

Bathman, I hope these are not "Gotcha!" needles that vanish when you needed them most. As discussed in another thread, I had a similar experience with the glideslope needle on a couple of occasions EGCF and EGCS.

Just started to play with the ILS facility and I'm struggling to get both glideslope and localizer "cross hairs"

Initially all I was getting was localizer indicator. I then clicked "enable ILS Vertical Guidance" in the "instrument Options" and now I get a glideslope indicator but no localizer cross hair.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

BJ, you do have a point in this. All these changes would have to be taken into account in aviation. However, just to have a clearer view of your suggestions, and to help us focus better on the problem at hand, do you know of any PORTABLE GPS navigation sets that factor the changing air pressure automatically into the equation, to give you the accurate reading you mention? If so please direct us to their websites so that we can see how the mechanism, if practicable, can be incorporated into SD.
